JACK DANIEL’S AND UNCLE NEAREST ANNOUNCE FIRST SELECTIONS FOR THE NEAREST & JACK ADVANCEMENT INITIATIVE LEADERSHIP ACCELERATION PROGRAM AND BUSINESS INCUBATION PROGRAM

Byron Copeland and Tracie Franklin selected to Leadership Acceleration Program; Du Nord Craft Spirits selected to Business Incubation Program

LYNCHBURG, TN – The Jack Daniel Distillery and the Nearest Green Distillery have announced Byron Copeland and Tracie Franklin as the first selections for the Nearest & Jack Leadership Acceleration Program, and Du Nord Craft Spirits has been selected to the Business Incubation Program.

Launched in June 2020, the Nearest & Jack Advancement Initiative aims to advance diversity within the American whiskey industry and includes the creation of the Nearest Green School of Distilling, the Leadership Acceleration Program, and the Business Incubation Program.

The Leadership Acceleration Program is designed to fast-track the development of Black candidates for future Master Distillers, Distillery Managers, and other senior management positions within the American whiskey industry.

Byron Copeland, currently an Operations Team Leader at the Jack Daniel Cooperage, has been selected for the Leadership Acceleration Program with a track toward leadership roles in operations and site management at Jack Daniel’s and Brown-Forman Corporation. Byron joined Brown-Forman in 2015 after previous operations roles for Sabra Dipping Company, Target, and Atlanta Gas Light. He earned a BA from Morehouse College and will complete his MBA from Columbia Southern University this December.

Tracie Franklin, who previously studied the craft of distilling with famed master distiller Dave Pickerell, prior to becoming one of the whiskey industry’s most recognized and respected ambassadors, has been selected for the Master Distiller track. Named “US” Scotch Ambassador of the Year by Whisky Magazine, Franklin earned a BFA from California State University-Fullerton and previously worked with William Grant & Sons, Angel’s Envy, Whersky, and SPIRIBAM.

“The Nearest & Jack Advancement Initiative honors the history, legacy, and relationship of Jack Daniel and Nearest Green,” said Matt Blevins, Jack Daniel’s Global Brand Director. “These are important steps in creating lasting change within our industry, and we couldn’t be prouder to have Tracie and Byron lead the way as the first selections for the Leadership Acceleration Program and Du Nord Craft Spirits as part of our Business Incubation Program.”

“What we are doing to diversify our industry has never been attempted before, in any American industry, that I am aware of,” said Fawn Weaver, CEO, Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey. “We are shaking up the status quo by bringing new ideas to the table that can truly create change. For decades D&I has been a part of the conversation. The Nearest & Jack Advancement Initiative, through our alliance with Jack Daniel’s, as well as other industry leaders, decided to stop talking and to start doing. These are just the first steps toward making diversity and inclusion in our amazing industry a reality.”

Du Nord Craft Spirits – a small batch distillery based in Minneapolis, Minnesota producing gin, vodka, liqueurs and whiskeys – has been selected for the Business Incubation Program. Du Nord was founded in 2013 and is committed to diversifying the craft alcohol community by actively recruiting underrepresented communities of women and racial minorities. The Business Incubation Program provides African American entrepreneurs with mentorship in all areas of the distilling business including access to marketing, branding, expanded distribution networks, and other assets and opportunities for growth.

“Working with the Nearest Green Distillery and Jack Daniel Distillery has been a once in a lifetime opportunity for Du Nord,” said Chris Montana, owner of Du Nord Craft Spirits. “The staff and resources at both partner companies have been immensely helpful, and I am optimistic that Du Nord will grow and thrive with the tools we have learned from the Nearest & Jack Advancement Initiative.”

UNCLE NEAREST AND JACK DANIEL’S JOIN FORCES TO LAUNCH THE NEAREST & JACK ADVANCEMENT INITIATIVE TO INCREASE DIVERSITY IN AMERICAN WHISKEY INDUSTRY

UNCLE NEAREST AND JACK DANIEL’S JOIN FORCES TO LAUNCH THE NEAREST & JACK ADVANCEMENT INITIATIVE TO INCREASE DIVERSITY IN AMERICAN WHISKEY INDUSTRY

Together the Two Tennessee Distilleries Have Pledged $5 Million to Advance African American Leadership in Whiskey

LYNCHBURG, TN – The Jack Daniel Distillery and the Nearest Green Distillery announced today the Nearest & Jack Advancement Initiative to further diversity within the American whiskey industry. Both companies are supporting it equally with an initial combined pledge of $5 million to help create the Nearest Green School of Distilling, develop the Leadership Acceleration Program (LAP) for apprenticeships and establish the Business Incubation Program (BIP), focused on providing expertise and resources to African Americans entering the spirits industry as entrepreneurs. This joint initiative will be guided by an advisory board with members from both organizations.

Motlow State College, the fastest growing college in Tennessee, has worked with leaders from both companies for the past year to develop a curriculum for the Nearest Green School of Distilling. The STEM based and employable skills focused program has passed Motlow State requirements and is now awaiting approval from the Tennessee Board of Regents to begin moving toward accreditation by the institutions accrediting body SACSCOC. The certificate program may be offered as early as Fall 2021.

The Leadership Acceleration Program (LAP) will offer apprenticeships specifically to African Americans already in the whiskey industry, who are wanting to become a head distiller, head of maturation or production manager. The inaugural apprentices have already been identified and will begin shadowing at top distilleries throughout the country.

The third arm of the Nearest & Jack Advancement Initiative is the Business Incubation Program (BIP) that will offer African American entrepreneurs mentorship in all areas of the distilling business, including access to top marketing firms, branding executives, expanded distribution networks and other assets and opportunities to grow their spirits businesses.

“Generally, when companies talk about the need to improve diversity, few immediate action steps follow,” said Fawn Weaver, CEO, Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey. “Our group is different. We are doers, and we all agreed to work together to improve diversity in our industry, and specifically, a way to get African Americans into top positions within our industry. Nearest Green taught Jack Daniel how to make Tennessee whiskey and we’re incredibly proud our companies are joining forces to further their legacies of excellence, and to make distilling and the whiskey industry we love more diverse.”

“Given our deep commitment to diversity and inclusion, I am thrilled we are coming together in this way today,” said Lawson Whiting, President and Chief Executive Officer, Brown-Forman Corporation, the parent company of Jack Daniel’s. “This collaboration allows the extraordinary friendship of Nearest and Jack, and the hope they embodied during racially divided times in our country’s history, to help us advance the next generation of African American leaders in our industry.”

Top Barrel of Each Tree to be Auctioned Off with Proceeds Going to the Distillery’s “Operation Ride Home” Program

LYNCHBURG, Tenn. (November 7, 2019) – The Jack Daniel Distillery will be bringing holiday cheer and sharing a special Lynchburg tradition this year with the building of five whiskey barrel trees around the country.

The distillery’s holiday tradition began in 2011 with the first 26-foot tall tree made from 140 American white oak whiskey barrels being built in Lynchburg, TN, home of Jack Daniel’s.  That tree will once again go up and replicas will be built in Chicago, IL, Dallas, TX, Milwaukee, WI, and Nashville, TN.

As part of its “Operation Ride Home” program, the famed distillery and partner, the Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA), will auction off the top barrel of each tree with proceeds going to assist junior-enlisted service members and families travel from their place of military service to back home for the holidays. Since the program began, 7,232 junior-enlisted service members and those with families have made the trip home to see loved ones over the holidays because of Operation Ride Home. Men and women from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard have been assisted with travel to all 50 states.

“At Jack Daniel’s, we like to say that good cheer is our number one export to the world,” said Master Distiller Jeff Arnett. “The barrel tree in Lynchburg has a special way of bringing people together, just like Operation Ride Home, and we hope friends either living in or visiting these locations will stop by and join us as we celebrate this most special holiday season. After all, it’s not what’s under the tree that’s important, but who’s around it.”

Jack Daniel’s only uses new charred oak barrels to make its whiskey and they are never filled a second time. The barrels that will be used to build all the trees were earlier entrusted to mature the famed Tennessee Whiskey and will now be bringing another special holiday ‘spirit’ to many of their friends around the country.

To find out more about taking home one of the barrels from the five trees, please visit www.jackdaniels.com.

JACK DANIEL DISTILLERY RELEASES 2019 SINGLE BARREL “HERITAGE BARREL” TENNESSEE WHISKEY

Award-winning, limited-edition Tennessee whiskey celebrates

historic craftsmanship steeped in tradition

LYNCHBURG, Tenn. (October 15, 2019) – Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel “Heritage Barrel” will return to shelves for a limited run this fall. Fewer than 200 barrels, aged in barrels crafted in the classic style used by Jack Daniel himself in the company’s earliest days, have been hand-picked by Master Distiller Jeff Arnett and his team of whiskey makers for this special release. Last year’s edition was named one of the top three  whiskeys of 2018 by Whisky Advocate

With an extra year aged at the highest altitude of the Jack Daniel Distillery’s warmest barrelhouse, this year’s iteration of Heritage Barrel will have a greater depth of color and character for fans of the original run to enjoy. The rich vanilla, oak spice and sweet caramel flavors are derived from a unique barrel toasting you won’t find in any other Single Barrel expression. Each heritage barrel is slowly heated to achieve a deeper, richer toasted layer before being charred, evoking the barrels of the distillery’s earliest coopers.

“The second release of Heritage Barrel will be everything that the first issue was, and then some,” said Arnett. “As the angels share grows, each drop becomes more precious and this whiskey is guaranteed to not disappoint.”

Jack Daniel’s is the only major whiskey company in the world to make its own barrels, crafted from American white oak and hand raised by our expert coopers. The unique barrels crafted to mature “Heritage Barrel” take a trip back in time to Jack’s humble beginnings and celebrate the vital maturation process that takes Tennessee whiskey from the distillery, to the bottle.

The limited-edition bottle will hit shelves in mid-October available in a 750ml size with a suggested retail price of $64.99.

AR brings an engaging experience rich with stories and visuals in a way that’s uniquely Jack

LYNCHBURG, Tenn. (April 15, 2019) – Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey is rolling out an Augmented Reality (AR) app that will take consumers on a virtual journey of the Jack Daniel Distillery through a series of pop-up book style dioramas with more than 10 minutes of content providing an engaging experience rich with stories and visuals in a way that’s uniquely Jack.

“In today’s world, it’s important for us to reach fans and consumers where they are,” said Jeff Cole, Modern Media Director for Jack Daniel’s. “That means sharing content that’s unique, interesting and relevant though a variety of digital mediums. In 2016, we launched an immersive Virtual Realty experience and in 2018 we launched our official podcast, ‘Around the Barrel.’ This new AR experience is taking our brand storytelling to the next level.”

Once consumers download the dedicated app, they can point their phones at any Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey bottle (from 50mL to 1.75L) to uncover the animations, voice overs, and all the stories that make the more than 150-year old brand so special, from the Cave Spring water to the distilling process, to name a few.

Jack Daniel’s partnered with Tactic, a San Francisco-based company specializing in the production of immersive experiences, to develop the app.

“Augmented reality is in an exciting stage, and new technology and techniques are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible,” said Peter Oberdorfer, President of Tactic. “The Jack Daniel’s AR app features technology that sets the bar for creative storytelling in this new medium. The learnings and best practices from Jack Daniel’s will help inform the development of AR apps across different brands and industries.”

The AR experience is divided into three unique parts, each designed with the look and feel of hand- crafted models and integrate real-time, environmental lighting and textures. The first experience transforms the front label of the bottle into a miniature version of the Jack Daniel Distillery. The second walks step by step through the process of making Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey, and the third shares stories of the man himself, Jack Daniel.

The Jack Daniel’s AR app will be available for download in the US for both iOS and Android platforms on April 15.
